About Aikido

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 20th century. Unlike competitive combat sports, Aikido focuses on harmony, mutual respect, and peaceful conflict resolution. Its techniques blend with an opponent’s energy rather than clashing against it, making it a practice suitable for all ages, genders, and levels of physical ability.

At its core, Aikido emphasises ethical self-defence—protecting oneself without causing harm to the attacker. Training is built on cooperation and partner practice, which not only develops skill but also fosters awareness, discipline, and respect for others.

Meet Your Instructor

Frederic Egersdorfer began his Aikido journey in 1995, training steadily until 1999 before taking a break from formal practice. In 2013, he returned to the mat with renewed commitment and has continued training ever since. In 2020, Frederic took over teaching responsibilities at The Pinetown Aikikai Club, continuing the legacy of his instructor, Rowan.

Over the years, Frederic has twice achieved 3rd Kyu ranking. While his formal grading does not yet reflect the depth of his experience, his training spans decades, with an emphasis on practical understanding, personal growth, and sharing the art of Aikido with others.

Frederic’s approach to teaching is grounded in humility and consistency, focusing on Aikido as both a martial art and a way of life. He primarily teaches adults but welcomes younger students from the age of 8, encouraging steady progress in a respectful and supportive environment.
